G'day for the grape

BAROSSA, Australia -- "If you drink too early in the day, you're a drunkard. But if you combine it with food, you're a gourmet."

This explains the box of crackers Ralf Hadzic is toting as we tour Australia's premier wine region, the Barossa.

German speakers from Silesia, now part of Poland, settled this delicious slice of South Australia -- famous for its flagship shiraz grapes -- more than 160 years ago.

Thai out

Gourmet is great, but nothing beats the lure of comfort food, the kind that reminds us of good, old home-style cooking. And if we can enjoy it in style, with polite food servers to boot, the dining experience is all the more memorable.

And Thai Patio, which recently joined the dining destinations in Greenbelt 5, may just have the zing to satisfy your craving, if you like vivid flavors, that is.

Hillsborough business picks up the pieces following flood

When co-owners Shannon Garrity and Nadine Murtha opened the Red Wagon Gourmet restaurant on March 8, all they saw ahead was a successful business venture.

"We have to start from scratch," Garrity said this week.

Fancy food portions are often too small for me

NEW ORLEANS -- We are sitting at a fancy-pants restaurant in the French Quarter, guests of a generous friend and gourmet whose main hobby it is to ferret out such pink and pleasurable places.

There is the clanking of crystal, a stable of obsequious waiters, fresh flowers and cloth napkins the size of Ecuador. Uptown businessmen sniff at corks, and skinny women in Chanel suits toss their coifs.
